They make a round cord. Nice way to use your odd pieces of yarns, fibers (ie crewel pieces), etc.

When I was young we used to make "knitting bobbins" using wooden cotton reels with 4 or 6 nails knocked into the top. We called it French knitting. I have never seen it done for years so would be interested to see what you make.
