Tatted edges

These are the edges I use for lacemaking demonstrations.

A simple ring and chain -- simple split ring edges.

I'm using Lizbeth size 20, colors 170 & 138.  It is over 24" long.

I find the wooden edge keepers keep my tatting from tangling up.  I tend to tat a little bit here and there, so nice to tuck in a bag and carry along.

Tatted sample (edge pattern).   I used Yarnplayer's HDT.   Her HDTs are a dream to tat with.

 I may try this again with a different size fiber.   Maybe a size 40 or 50.

This edge is about 30".   I'm not certain if I'll continue making it or not!  I'm looking to find a new edge to keep in my hand bag.

Skill - Building continues ....

This is Skill-Building 5:  Fun With Fans

Frame pattern c.Karen H Thompson, 2021

During the session, Karen Thompson showed the participants, a pincushion with an edge of bobbin lace fans.   An a-ha moment as I remembered a Bent Creek pattern with Bunny that I stitched and hadn't finished into anything.   Also found some colorful fabric in my stash.   When I finish this bobbin lace edge, I plan to make a pincushion and add the edge --  (well, thats the plan).   I used DMC perle coton #8 colors 3823 & 3687.

 This is the piece I started in the zoom session.   A few mistakes --- (DMC perle coton No. 8, colors 991 and 959).   

Once I found a stitched piece that would fit inside the bobbin lace frame, I started over with white card stock (photo above) and perle cotton No.8

I was asked about lace tools - not many are needed for bobbin lace.   The decorated tools I have with Autumn Leaves are from Alison Tolson.   If you sign up for virtual workshops, you will get a supply list - or you can purchase a kit with everything you need to get started.

The next Skill Building session I signed up for is to learn Trails, Spiders, and Rose Ground.   I struggled with trails in skill building 2, will practice them this week as the session is scheduled 9th of July!!  

If anyone is interested in sessions, check out the Lace Museum.    Workshops currently listed are for bobbin lace, crochet, knitting, tatting, etc.   In addition to bobbin lace sessions, I signed up for a Teneriffe workshop.

Am I still tatting?   Yes!   I have some portable projects.   Emptying shuttles (butterflys) and I continue on my edge.  I've got the pattern memorized.   (Sophie T.   I tried a couple edging patterns in 2013.   Link to post and photos HERE.    Once finished (homework) Youngburg patterns, I thought I'd pull out the LaCroix edge patterns and try them again.    The vintage patterns are great.

Edging or Insertion No. 1143.     I used size 20 Lizbeth fiber.   The top with 138 [greens] and 170 [yellows].    It is nice to have the green on one side and yellow on other - done by switching shuttles after each set of ring/chain.   The lower 620 (pink) + 138 (greens) where I used the shoe lace trick to keep all the rings pink and chains green.   Same pattern, different color results.   

Edging No. 1114.  I used size 20 Lizbeth fiber.   The top 164 (teal/green mix) + 661 (teal), switch shuttles to keep colors separate at the top and bottom.   The lower is done with 621 (pink) + 138 (greens) - to keep rings pink and chains green, used the shoe lace trick.    Same pattern, both ways are pretty.

I have been saving the little tatted samples.  That way, when I want to use the edge in the future, I have piece in hand for reference.

Thought I try something different, try to create a tatted edge.      I admit, I've never tatted an edge before.   Why?   I'm not sure!                                                                                                                                                   The top one is Mary Konior: Corn and Chaff, from Tatting in Lace (borrowed book from the IOLI Library ) - I adjusted the join picot size a couple times + I've got a good sample!      

The other one is from Handy Hands newsletter.    Old and New Designs in Tatting.   I think it looks terrible.   I like the way the edge looks in photo; however, mine is pretty twisted!   I'm thinking there must be an easier way to tat this edge.    Or, a way to tat without such a 'twist'.
