Inspiration ...

Boarded the South Shore this a.m.
and headed into Chicago w/Alex, youngest son.

We wanted to view the Matisse exhibit before it closed on June 20th. It was an interesting exhibit and showed how Henri Matisse was inspired by other artists & developed his own way of expressing his ideas.

I think Alex was more impressed by the jade displays, ancient coins, blades, and Sound & Vision exhibit.

The Sound & Vision exhibit was in gallery 188, Modern Wing - It was unique! On one wall there was a tv set on and when cars zoomed accross the screen, they sounded a musical tone! Each lane of traffic had a unique tone. Traffic as art - awesome.

The Lions at AIC are still decked out with the Blackhawks Helmets.

I have tried two more times to get a simple pink heart completed
That reverse work just gets me confused
I'll be moving along & all of a sudden .... oops!

Trying again this afternoon

You'd think by now, I'd be able to get
a larger bit of tatting completed ...

I'm going to try marking the pattern as I go along
and triple counting the rings before closing them

There must be a trick to opening a closed ring - I just get a mess

Meanwhile, I emptied my shuttles & made some smaller motifs
for cards (and for friends who requested some! --- I haven't forgotten)

Perhaps I just need MORE shuttles!!! LOL

Monday morning, Alex & I took the South Shore into Chicago. the train was PACKED! Standing room only ....


Once on the ground, we walked to the Art Institute & adopted dots!!! He selected a dk blue & black dot --- I have a green one. We went up to see the Caravaggio painting on loan -- walked thru the Impressionism Galleries. Then, went thru the photo collage exhibit and Arts & Crafts exhibit.

Headed to the Christkindle market and Alex purchased a carved bird & some wooden puzzles.

It was totally cold!!! We ended up at Starbucks to warm up & wait for the train home. We had a nice seat on the double decker car. Once home, Alex wanted me to take him shopping --- so, picked up Nick & went to the Game Store. Those game people speak a different language!!!

The compositions they made with photographs and watercolors are whimsical and fantastical, combining human heads and animal bodies, placing people into imaginary landscapes, and morphing faces into common household objects. With sharp wit and dramatic shifts of scale akin to those Alice experienced in Wonderland, these images stand the rather serious conventions of photography in the 1860s and 1870s on their heads."

A Quick Trip ...

After dropping Alex off at school, made a mad dash to get ready & head to the South Shore train station. It was a beautiful, cool, sunny day & I thought a visit to Chicago was in order. I went the Chicago Cultural Center first --- for a snap of the ceiling. It is such a beautiful building. Headed over to the Art Institute to view the 2nd rotation of Beyond Golden Clouds Japanese Screens

What a room full of beauty!!! That closes on September 27th

Then, I crossed the hallway and entered a special exhibit A Case for Wine which closes Sept 20th. I had not intended to wander thru this exhibit until I was told there were many TEXTILES
on display.

Yeah, went right on over & was delighted at the stumpwork around a wall mirror,


a needlepoint chair seat, a small bag, a bedcover with embroidery --- and more! I did an on-line search for textiles on display. Some of these came up in the search, others did not.

If you follow the link to the current exhibitions, you will see selected works --- not a lot of photos of the textiles, tho.

There were embroidered pieces, filet net pieces, a beautiful altar piece, altar cloth, fragments, etc. I was delighted to stumble on this exhibit.

Had to walk quickly to the train station ... had to get back to haul DS around. Wish I would have had more free time today : )

My Mom's birthday is later this month & we may go see the exhibits, lunch, etc. I keep my fingers crossed for good weather & no mishaps!

Becoming Edvard Munch

Last month, DH & I visited the Art Institute of Chicago. We enjoyed the Edvard Munch exhibit. In addition to E.Munch, there were works by artists (his peers). My husband & I loved this painting: George ClausenSchoolgirls1880

I visited the Brauer Museum of Art earlier this afternoon. They have had an exhibit of Japanese Prints on display since December 7, 2007 -- and it is a 10-15 minute drove from my house -- and I decided I wanted to see the prints BEFORE they closed the exhibit down on March 23rd.

When I came home, I realized, my post about Chicago -- in February was in DRAFT form. I never finished it -- or published the post!

Can we pretend it is February? Here is the post:

Maybe next time I visit Chicago, I'll have to stop by again and see what new & exciting pocket art is available : ) I'm thinking my visit into the city may have been the cause of the relapse in this cold ... I thought I was pretty much ok & on the mend ... and may have over-done it. I visited Millenium Park, during the sleet & rain storm, yeah, of course - typical February weather in Chicago -- because I just HAD TO SEE the Ice Museum. Yes, well worth it. A wall of ice in different colors. And the weather just enhanced the beauty. Tons of photographs HERE.

I did enjoy the The E. M. Bakwin Collection of Indonesian Textiles exhibit PLUS, had a ticket to view the Homer & Hopper Exhibits at the Art Institute of Chicago.

I hope to get back into the city to see the The Keiskamma Altarpiece, March 27 - May 11, 2008. Maybe visit City Stitcher, a needlepoint store. And, would like to see the Embroidered Myths and Everyday Stories exhibit. Big plans ... looking forward to another trek : )
