Penny Wooden Doll (dresses w/tatting)

I was unsure about hand washing these

doll dresses.  I have had the Penny Wooden Dolls 

for several years.

I bought the dresses at a local doll show -- they are lovely with the tatting.   I gave one to my Siste-in-Law, too.  Her doll dress had blue tatting --

I went ahead and hand washed & air dry.

They look SO MUCH BETTER.

This is a first attempt at a Clover Brand tatting pattern - purchased online from Etsy, seller in Japan.  I used a lovely HDT made by Marilee Rockley aka Yarnplayer, to test drive the pattern.   I think I've gotten the hang of the pattern.

 These are photographs of the front and back of a kit.   Aren't the Chocolate and Milk color shuttles unique?  I hadn't seen those colors before.   The kit has fiber, pin, ring, shuttles, and two large pattern sheets.   Beautiful package.

Sunday, I went to the Doll + Bear show.  My MIL's doll needed shoes.   I did find shoes and socks for her doll - and a charming new dress for my Penny Wooden Doll.  The tatting is lovely on the dress.  I have three of these tatted dresses made from handkerchiefs.   Others pictured HERE.

Repurposed

At the local doll show, I purchased

doll dresses made from vintage handkerchiefs.

I think they are so pretty,  embellished with tatting.

They are perfect for Penny Wooden Dolls.

Pink Artist Squares

UPDATE: These are the squares I donated to "Love Squared". The squares were due on March 1st. The first square in this post was selected by Monica & is in the back of the skirt. The purpose of the doll is to raise donations and awareness for breast cancer research. Please consider entering the drawing and supporting The Pink Artist Community Art Doll Project. March 1, 2008 Post: Winter PinkWhen it is made with your hands, it is made from the heart Blooming PinkWhen you create with your hands, you create with the heart OK, this was a challenge for me. I'm the kind of person that uses a pattern, from designer, and may adjust it a bit -- or change a few fibers. but the thought of making something from scratch -- no pattern, was a challenge for me. As I got moving along with ideas, picking out some fabrics & embellishments, it became easier and easier. Quite frankly, much better than copying somebody else's design!! I consider these beginner squares; however, am delighted to have created something special for the The Pink Artist Project. This square was made with an assortment of fabrics - I used the buttonhole edge [dmc 318 & dmc 223] w/Frosted Mauve beads. I found red shell button and heart shaped buttons to sew on. This square was made with assorted fabrics - buttonhole stitching with dmc 223 & used bronze (iris hex) beads. More heart shaped buttons from the package! When it is made with your hands, it is made from the heart!! Update: Thx for your kind comments & words of encouragement. I would like to create a special Comfort Doll, next. I've been collecting 'stuff', oddments, orts, scraps, etc. and think I have enough fabrics now.

Monica Magness has a special, creative touch! She created the doll, assembled all the donated squares, and WOOT : ) What a fabulously interesing doll!

My GF, Marjorie, donated EIGHT squares! I found this photo with her square. It is the second row -- last square on the right side.

Hey wait a minute ... our squares are VERY CLOSE TOGETHER! Her square on the right edge & mine on the left edge of THIS picture.

Per Monica's blog: "the pink artist" is a community of artists joining together to create one joint art doll to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. When doll has been completed, it will be mailed in to Art Doll Quarterly™ before finally being auctioned off on eBay at a later date. ALL PROCEEDS WILL DIRECTLY BENEFIT CHARITY. Remaining squares have made our wall art piece a reality! BRAVO!

Made by my Mom

I just love clothespin dolls. My Mom gave me TWO more!!!
She said we could get together in September and make some. I haven't been able to figure out how to do them. Most of the patterns I've found on-line are different from the ones my Mom has made. I am entering them into the Lake County Fair - under dolls. Not sure if the judge will consider awarding a ribbon as there are usually a ton of entries in that category.

Penny Wooden Doll

Finally, my kit & dolls arrived!

The back of the kit says: "Penny Wooden: dolls were originally hand-carved in pine, poplar or maple by families of German and Tyrolean toymakers. In the early nineteenth century, they were imported into and reproduced by London toymakers. Later, they were made in New England. The actual "Penny Wooden" dolls sold for a penny in New England around the middle of the nineteenth centrury. Hence, its name."

The kit includes: authentic replica jointed, hand-painted wooden doll, pattern and materials to make a colorful 19th century costume.

I ordered one kit & a couple dolls. That way, I can make up the doll dress [one with the kit] and give it away. I am keeping one doll, so I can make more clothing! Not sure about the other doll; however, I think once 'somebody' sees it, they will want one, too : )

The dolls I've seen at the LNS, are $68.00 -- and the idea is to cross stitch a design on the apron and add to the Miss Penny Doll. I have not decided on the apron, maybe I'll see how I fare on the clothing, first!

AND I HAVE FACES!!

I'm so thrilled. My sketches of faces were terrible. So ugly -- and I don't mean, "they are so ugly, they are cute", I mean ... they werent' good : ( Local bead shop was going to a trade show in early February & owner was aware of the Comfort Doll Project & said she'd pick up some 'faces'..... meanwhile, Thx Monique for lending me a hand. You are very kind : )

And, eventually, I am going to have a finished doll for the Comfort Doll Project. I have been gathering up some 'ingredients' and look forward to creating something special.

AND, I still hope to get a 2" x 2" square done for the art doll to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. I pulled out some Pink material [I don't own much] and some fibers, beads, etc. I need some inspiration & free time to participate. Needs to be mailed by March 1, 2008

Art Dolls!!!

Bought this magazine from Barnes and Noble WOW! It is fab. Good paper stock for starters ... and the pictures are out-of-sight. If you don't get any ideas from ONE ISSUE -- you are just brain dead. LOL

From the Public Library: I found a couple books on dolls ... sculpting, sewing, creating. More like .... now that you've seen the finished product -- here are a few ways to get started & some tips for doll making. Not exactly what I was looking for ... but a good start!! For the Comfort Doll Project, P.Winter wants dolls up to 6". Yeah, I think I can do that.
