Local Quilt Show ....

Lovely finds in the "Garden Maze of Vendors".     Petals + Blooms web site link here.   I bought some 12 wt Sulky, needles, and a vintage hanky with tatted edge.  I probably should have picked up a spool of blue thread, too.   maybe next time.     Diane, blogging at Lace- Lovin' Librarian, was the first person I know who tatted with this Sulky fiber.   More on her post - link HERE

One of the vendors had closed a store 16 years ago.   Was an area of nostalgia!  I selected a charming sunbonnet sue pin.     Got to talking and she said she had a couple shuttles in a 'special bag'.  Not on display, under the table, behind the drape.    She gave them to me!   These shuttles are happy in their new home - Susan Bates [C J Bates + son Chester CT]and "Boye" improved.   [The Boye Needle Co. Chicago].

This, my favourite quilt - Ewe-Niquely Baltimore.   Sign said it was a Block-of-the-month - made in wool.  Very unique and lovely.   Also was given a special award from judge.  

 Thx Karol and Candy for meeting up with me.   I know I'm a snail when looking at everything.   You are both very patient and kind.

Every year volunteers make a quilt from donated blocks to hand-quilt during the next season. This year we are asking for the “Honey Bee” quilt block; and since honey bees are social insects, we decided to have a HONEY BEE SOCIAL. We will meet some of our block donors, help novice sewers assemble their block, trade fabric swatches, and just have a good time. If you’d like to make a block, help others, need help yourself, or just want to meet and share a good time, come to the Park on one or both Fridays.

Supplies needed: Hand-sewing needles, Pins, Thimble, Scissors, Thread - white or beige, Iron-on fusible interfacing, Tape Measure

If you have fabric to bring, you will need the following: Flowered Fabric, Medium green leafy fabric, Light yellow tone-on-tone, Light Blue tone-on-tone, Black solid

Note: If you do not have fabric to use, packets will be available at the Social for purchase. A sewing machine will be provided, assistance will be given beginners, and blocks will later be assembled into a quilt top for the 2011 quilting bees.

National Quilting Day

Today is National Quilting Day .... so, what are you quilting today?

National Quilting Day (third Saturday in March) celebrates fabulous quilts and those who make them. Definitely a ladies hobby, quilting is a skill that produces warm and beautiful results.

Today is a day to recognize and appreciate the quiltmakers, the skill and the warm and the results. If you are a quiltmaker, spend a minute to recognize and appreciate that you have truely been blessed with a special skill. If you are not a quiltmaker, wrap yourself into a quilt and enjoy the warmth.

Origin of "National Quilting Day":
The National Quilting Association started National Quilting Day in 1991. Their members passed a resolution at the 22and Annual Show in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 1991.



I usually submit a block (or 2) for the annual Friendship Quilt. My 2009 blocks didn't get turned in by the deadline. I will take them in tomorrow & hope they can be added to the stack when the quilt is assembled in April.

I like one color combination better than the other (block on the right w/prettier blue makes a nicer block, and I think that is color the pattern called for ). I'm not crazy about one part where the star is 'off', didn't get that corner lined up -- so trying again. Mistake really shows up (IMO).

I made the first couple with sewing machine & will try to hand piece - get those squares to line up!!!

Volunteer quilters meet each month to demonstrate their talents. Lively conversation, greeting of old friends, and exchange of information accompanies the quilting. Quilters are working on “Lotsa Potsa Flowers”, the latest quilt to be assembled from blocks donated by many friends. As soon as that one is completed, the new Friendship Star will be put into the frame.

On exhibit is the recently-completed Indiana Puzzle quilt, which was done in traditional red and white. Many other quilts completed at the park since 1979 will also be displayed. Stop by to meet these talented volunteers and join them in quilting? You will have an enjoyable time and help us complete our quilt.

Assembly of Friendship Star Quilt: Donated blocks of the blue and yellow Friendship Star have been received and ready to assemble into the 2010 quilt top and be quilted during the Quilting Bees each month May through October. Join us on Thursdays, April 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. for the assembly. Meet downstairs in the Visitor Center at Deep River County Park. Bring a sack lunch and a drink. New quilt block: We are asking for blocks for the next quilt, “Honey Bee”. The pattern and a sample will be available during Maple Syrup Time and in Wood’s Mill beginning May 1. If you do not have the right fabric, packets of fabric sufficient to make the block will be available for purchase. The deadline to return one or more completed blocks is Sunday, October 24 at 4 p.m.

I was in South Bend to get DH's computer bag repaired

Stopped at Erica's

and not only picked up the butterfly yo yo maker,

The store model is so cute - I hope I have enough skills to duplicate : )

After reading thru the Friendship Star, 6" block notes
I pulled out some possible fabrics

I'm liking the blue with stars
I can cut the squares
so I'm using more of the
the darker blues

Still undecided about the
yellow

I have a couple pencils
Each pencil compliments a different fabric

I think I've narrowed down
choices to THREE

I love yellow

"absolutely no floral"
No problem

Each section will be 2 1/2" to form
a 6" star block

Yeah ... wish me luck on the cutting out part

Friendship Quilt

I stopped by the Grist Mill (Deep River Park) earlier today. I was thrilled to see the flower pot blocks basted with the batting & set in the quilting frame!I think I spotted Marjorie's Block ... center row, second from the top.

This pictures shows what the quilt looks like in the frame:I sent in two blocks & will have to wait for the quilting to continue -- eventually, the rows will shift & visitors can see ALL the blocks.More about the Friendship Quilts HERE, previous postsWhen the Quilting Bees continue thru the Summer months, I hope to return and follow the progress. Honey BeeI used this block to make a pillow. Now, I have TWO pillows!
I took a quilting class in the Fall of 1998. We hand pieced blocks. I pulled them off my closet shelf and decided, "not another year". Added the batting, back -- sew up the sides and added buttons.

I am putting these items into the Lake County Fair - under Sewing. As they are not quilted together by hand or machine, they aren't supposed to be entered under quilting. Wish me luck!

Pillow is Complete!!!

My Original Design
This is hand stitched -- hand applique. I bought a pillow insert yesterday and hand stitched the last seam shut this a.m. I learned a few lessons along the way. Fabric stretches. Corners are important. Measure everything twice. My first pillow made from fabric!!

Original Design: Star Block

This is a patriotic theme I designed. It was a challenge to select the red,white,blue fabrics from my slim stash. Just fun to create. I added the red border & same red fabric [back] over the past couple of days. The pillow form I have in the closet is too small, I'll have to get a larger one! The applique and stitching is not perfect; however, I'm pleased with the way it turned out. Keeping my fingers crossed I can get this done -- right pillow insert & the bottom edge stitched. With no sewing machine, connecting those pieces takes patience and a lot of time : )

Yo-Yo Maker

So, I'm waiting for DH's bus -- and visited JoAnn Fabric's. Guess what was on sale? Clover Yo-Yo Makers . I tried to make yo-yo's in the past and failed ... and ever since I heard of these plastic 'helpers' I've been wanting to try them out. Recently, I enjoyed reading a post by Marjorie & saw a picture of how she used the heart-shaped yo-yos. Can you imagine -- heart shapes, flower shapes, and even round ones!!! Yeah, I got a couple of them. of course, they were on sale.

I hand pieced a couple of blocks for the Friendship Quilt. It didn't take long to stitch the pieces together
Now I need to decide which is the better of the two.Which one do you like? The blue flower or the beige flower?

For 20+ years, The staff at Wood's Historic Grist Mill (located in Deep River County Park) have collected quilt blocks for an annual Friendship Quilt.

The 2008 Friendship Quilt block is titled, "Lotsa Potsa Flowers". Deadline is July 27, 2008. To obtain a pattern, just call 219.947.1958.

During the year, they display the completed Friendship Quilts in the Grist Mill. The collected blocks are sewn together creating the quilt top, sandwiched with batting, put on a large frame, and hand quilted by volunteers during monthly Quilting Bees.

I have participated in recent years. With the pattern, I make TWO blocks and submit the best one!! These are pictures of quilt blocks from past friendship quilts:
