L.A.C.E. Day 2011: Snake Bookmark
On Saturday, June 18th, Karol and I went to
L.A.C.E. Day in Downer's Grove, Illinois.
We took a Beginning Bobbin Lace class with
Susie Johnson and Jane O'Connor.
With wonderful instruction and demonstrations, all of the students
(except me) finished their snake.
I didn't catch on to the rhythm of the bobbins for awhile.
We took a break for lunch + enjoyed chatting with Diane, Lace-Lovin' Librarian, and members of the L.A.C.E. chapter.
Went back to our pillows + bobbins, (was so hot in that room!)
and I think it was easier for me to work the pattern
after we took a break.
Opted to un-pin before completing.
In addition to talking with Diane and Karol ....
Late in the day, was introduced to three other bloggers: Gina (blogging at Threads of a Tatting Goddess and Poems of Lace & Embroidery), Marilee (blogging at Yarn Player blog) , and Sue Anna (new to me blog Sue Anna's Blog).

Now that the snake is off the pillow -- I'm not sure how to complete this project without the pillow, bobbins, etc.! I had found some silk pins at Erica's in South Bend. I may use some spoolies that I bought in LaPorte at House of Stitches. Perhaps with the few bobbins I have and the spoolies I can finish. I don't have much more to do.
I have a pillow - not a lace pillow, but might be good enough to finish this little thing.

Tatting Workshop
Bead Tatting Class

Had a delightful day learning new tatting
techniques ... adding BEADS!
The class was in Clarendon Hills, IL
at the Public Library.
Was interesting to use a different fiber (silk)
add beads, and make chains without the flip.
Quite a challenge to read the pattern
w/o diagram - with a lot of notes, I
think I managed to grasp the concepts
and can complete the pattern.
Enjoyed meeting + chatting with the
other students.
More classes tomorrow at Lace Day in Illinois.
I am signed up for Bobbin Lace. Keep your fingers crossed I can figure it out!
In addition to the classes, there are lace demos, lace exhibit,
and SHOPPING w/the vendors.

Lace Day
Kaye Judt + Jennifer, Tatting Corner patiently instructed the workshop. Thx a million, you both totally rock.
We learned dimensional tatting by making a poppy flower center. Mine is a practice piece - will be done in a dark fiber and added to the flower (yo yo).
The butterfly, see the blue butterfly? Eventually it will be edged with blue size 20 fiber. I was going around with the tatting + everything was so awkward in hand --- had to re start and try moving around the shape in a different direction. We added blingie dots with a heat tool (actually jennifer added them!)
Tatted the body of a dragonfly with wings added ... wire wings fused with shiny stuff (ok, I forget the name of the sparkle paper). The dragonfly had beads for eyes (and my beading GFs, I hope you are reading this, I managed to get beads in place). Plus, went over a daffodil pattern using similar tatting join (alligator join - bobble tatting)
As I looked around, I was inspired by my table mates.
Such beautiful tatting + fun cheering the ah-ha moments!

I learn so much more each time I have a lesson. My pieces start out all wobbly in hand and as I continue thru the patterns, the chains improve, the rings improve ... one side wobbly, the other side .... not so bad. IMO - books helpful, videos helpful, diagrams helpful ... none compares to attending a workshop.

I visited the web site & I thought I may have seen her tapestries on display in Chesterton.
