Point de Gaze-Inspired needle lace ornament

Here is a start:

 I like needle lace. have had a few classes from this instructor; however, it is something I've not perfected.    For this stitch sometimes my twisted stitch ends up an OYA knot.    I have to remind myself for OYA the thread is over the needle, for NL the thread is under the needle.    

This twisted stitch will grow into 3 rows -- and then a center.   Will grow up to be a needle lace wheel -- created on a ring (2 3/4" bangle) for an ornament.  Or for me, a practice piece.    The kit has a red fiber, gold-tone ring, stabilizer - which I will use on my 2nd attempt.   This is practice - argh - should look a lot better.

One of her books (on my shelf).   She is a much better instructor than my projects show.   Needlelace is a challenge for me as the fiber is small - using a larger fiber makes learning easier.   And still pretty (I think).

many small motifs.   As far as I am aware, can 

still be purchased thru tatting stores/vendors.

 

The Evening Star Quilt Guild of Anderson IN decided to use tatted motifs for flower centers in their quilt.

Marilee (aka Yarnplayer) + Marlene (aka The Mad Tatter)

Marvelous to visit with Marlene again.  We had our first face-to-face in the fall of 2012, at the House of Stitches in LaPorte.   I learned how to tat  from the owner of House of Stitches.   AND, at that visit, I saw Marlene's butterfly - using the HWT technique   (more in next post).     

  

I enjoy following "The Mad Tatter" on her tatting adventures , via  Cathy B's blog --- link HERE.       Marlene perfected a new technique!    Catherine Wheel Join!   So, what is a Catherine Wheel Join, you ask?   Here is a video:    Or, check out the pdf file - LINK HERE.

Marilee + Marlene were engrossed in tatting , esp., this particular tatted join.   We enjoy getting together to share knowledge, hands on demo, talk about the latest books +fibers, new patterns, tatting tools, and other funness.

  (btw, Marilee has oodles of videos, patterns, tips, how-tos -  Check out Yarnplayers blog - link HERE.   )    This (photo below) is one of Marilee's HDTs.  "Berry Sundae"  fiber!   chocolate and berries!   

 thx Marilee ; )    I'm thinking about how to use this unique colorway!   If you have ever used Yarnplayer HDTs, you already know the high quality fiber she has & also will know photos never do justice!  

 Sue Anna was tatting a lovely split ring ornament.   She used two fibers --- metallic and white fiber.

 This is the book --- the patterns are lovely.   Large diagrams, numbered, and look at the variety of motifs.  

Once Sue Anna finished this motif, I had to snap a couple photos.   I liked the sparkle, shimmer of the metallic.   It is a new(ish) product called Liz Metallic.      Personally, I have not tried it in a project.  The variety of colors are amazing!!! 

How cool to have the split rings create an interesting pattern of colors.   Awesome tatting Sue Anna!

 I have been tatting squares and think this fiber must have been a size 30 or  size 40 .   Maybe a 20 - is is 3cm x 3cm ...

Earlier this year, I was fortunate to find some vintage pattern booklets + couple of shuttles.  

The flat shuttles were etsy finds from the Shuttle Smith.   Excellent craftsmanship.    Beautiful shuttles.

And, could not resist Ayumi Horiai's ladybug embellished shuttle.  Lovely shuttles now available at the Tatting Corner.

Planning ahead

I bought some beautiful fiber from Marilee.   If you have not tried her HDT, head over to her etsy and see the lovely colorways!   A dream to tat with, too.   If Simon wasn't loose, I'd get it out of the safe place and take pictures ; )    As Simon is into everything, it is n't a good idea right now!

I brought a few tatting books with me to a recent gathering of creative friends.   My GFs are so talented and delightful to be around.   They teach classes, take classes -- bead jewelry, publish books -- crochet-bead jewelry [more on that in another post], knit, needlepoint, neeedlework on linen, etc.    My GFs seemed to enjoy Marilee's books and tatting projects.    I had them select something they would like, in the future.    Seems Marilee has a little bit of everything, in lovely colorways, and seems to be varied enough for all jewelry tastes.    I brought all four of her tatting books and GF, Sue, brought a Bead + Button magazine which featured Marilee's designs + an earring pattern..    They chose patterns from the three books shown above.

Currently,  I'm in the planning part of gathering up my fibers and beads.  These will be made with Marilee's HDT and Lizbeth fibers.  I have some beads, and GFs will pitch in with beads from their stash, too.  I want to use some fiber in my stash to test-tat some of the skills needed in the patterns.   Tho, am looking forward to creating something unique!    I'm hoping to get a few jewelry-things tatted this year and Wish me Luck!!!   I hope they will turn out as lovely as items shown in the books!

I have tatted my first pair of earrings.   I used Marilee Rockley's pattern, called Filigree Earrings.  This pattern and oodles of tatting information can be found on her blog, Yarnplayer's Tatting Blog.

I noticed she has a couple pair for sale in her etsy store - Yarnplayer.   For my earrings, I used Delica beads, from GF Beth, and Lizbeth Col. 117 - Size 20 fiber.    Should I ever attempt this again 

(and for me, was a challenge to keep everything even - and with a 'pair', keeping them alike) 

I probably would use  a variation of this pattern with jewelry findings in my stash.
