Bit of tatting ...

Tatting at the DuPage Co Fair over the

week-end.   Butterflys, a daisy, couple inches added to tatted edges.   (It can be a challenge to tat with the humid weather.)  Gave some butterflys away, enjoyed talking "tatting" with fair guests, most waiting to give bobbin lace a try. 

 Three bobbin lace "try me" pillows remained busy all afternoon.

   The 'Cheerful Daisy' pattern is in this book (book cover below).  I did a quick tat & think a re-tat needed.

The ISBN 978-4-05-800660-3 belongs to the Japanese craft book はじめてでも楽しくできる タティングレース (Tatting Lace: From Basics to Arrangements) by Chiko Sugimoto, published by Gakken.

Teneriffe Lace Needlework Kit(s)

I received an email / newsletter from Karen Bovard-Sayre, about her Needle Lace Arts, Teneriffe Lace kits.   Now I own a kit (or 2) and decided this is the day to look at her video step-by-step, to get the threads on the wooden loom.

 Guess what?  She makes it so east to start -- So I've got my pieces out and have started the foundations.

 The mess before the weaving and knotting begin on the looms .... 

For my tatting artist friends, you may recall she is the Author of many split ring tatting books.   PLUS - shuttles.   PLUS - ETSY.  May want to give the looms a 'go'.

The perle coton is done --- now to the finishing ....

 

The shapes are filled in.   Will need to pull away part of the fabric next.  Starch the pieces.   Remove the fabric & take off the frame.

Nanduti patterns for Christmas

Creating the large circle (2.5") with knots.   Pattern is an Avati poty inspired design to make a snowflake.  I'm using DMC coton perle 12, Color 3823.  I made two of the 6 snowflake spokes.  And I'm wondering if I should make the outside rim in the same color - or use one of the greens or red.   Decisions.

Nanduti Patterns for Christmas

 

Creating the large circle (2.5") with knots.   Pattern is an Avati poty inspired design to make a snowflake.  I'm using DMC coton perle 12, Color 3823.

As for the other two smaller (1.5") circles:

 I added an edge of red knots 

using DMC Coton Perle No. 8, Color 321.   This is an Arapaho Joaju pattern - made to create a ring of holiday leaf.

I added an edge of green knots using DMC Coton Perle No. 8, Col. 890 - which is similar to the Anchor evergreen color (0218).  This was on the little flower design.  The petals remind me of a french manicure.

I added some leaf designs in one circle (evergreen)

Anchor Pearl Cotton 12, Col. 0218, Lot 3079.

Also added petals to little flower in Red.

DMC 321, No. 8 Perle Coton.

Both will have knot edge in either red or green / both / white???

The white larger circle is for a snowflake which I haven't started yet.

DMC coton perle 12, Color 3823.

Sounds like next group of sessions will begin in Feb/March 2026.

Here is the latest on the Nanduti frame.

The pink flower is complete 1.75"

- DMC coton perle 8, Col. 818.

I removed the teal/gold motif which was

perle coton No.8.  Our next sessions are

using size 12 + I wanted to practice.

So the (lower left) partially created

circle is DMC coton perle 12, color 3823 for 

spokes and color 316 for woven petals & embellishment inbetween.  I do not have the variety of colors in size 12; however, do appreciate the lacy look using it.

After a couple rings of knots on the circle edge - I will attempt cutting away the fabric without clipping thru the fibers!  Wish me luck.

Plus, a few books I have on hand:

 Bilingual edition.   For our sessions, we sew on the spokes and them compensate the knots & weaving based on the sizes of our circles.

 Japanese with "how-to s".   For these motifs, instructions are to start with a certain number of spokes for the patterns.  

 Nice projects, diagrams, how-to s, and the gallery of Nyanduti is stunning.

Book Bits (Tatting, Nanduti, Lace)/ Scissors Bits

 

 After today's class session - start of the flower, top left, using DMC coton perle No. 8 - Col. 818 (Dawn Loving pattern).  Introduction to Nanduti class - thru The Lace Museum, Virtual Education.  Dawn Lovig is the instructor.  I don't care for the teal/gold one - I'm not sure if it was color selection, or way I wove; however, not really a good look -- may need to re-do.

Carrickmacross Scissors -- these are what I will use

with the Nanduti.   (When cloth is cut away)

Tools:   Scissors.   Above "German / Stainless Steel" (my best pair, very good quality),

Below "Pakistan" (better value - nice quality)

I noticed BOHIN has some nice looking

 Hardanger scissors on their site.   Look like the same

style scissors.

The frame was purchased from The Lace Museum.  Kit for the class.
