Skill-Building 4: Bobbin Lace Bookmark

 

Friday's Lace Session, Skill-Building 4:  

Trails, Spiders, + Rose Ground Bookmark

I used DMC Col 553, No. 8  Perle Coton.

I will finish the braids & then take out the pins. 

"It matches my snake!"

This past week-end, DH, DD + I went to the Lubeznik Center for the Arts
Lakefront Art Festival

While browsing the booths, talking with the artists
(awesome Scrimshaw, btw)

I came accross a small bin of pottery and nearly screamed
out loud "It Matches my Snake!" --- thank goodness, Lynn U
(from NANI)
was in the same booth - or, I probably would have startled the passers by.

Yet, really, the pottery matches my bobbin lace snake - perfectly!!!

During Show-n-Tell at Saturday's L.A.C.E. meeting, member Marianne had made a crochet table runner (very kewl with a hot pepper) and said she arranged her bobbin made snakes on her condiment containers.

So, when I saw the little pottery - I bought it right away, for my first lace snake to adorn. I was told we should keep our first project. Tho, I kind of like the 2nd one I'm making a bit better. Fewer errors and all ...

I was looking for a notecard to send to my MIL, and DH lead me to Margaret Michael card display. Oh my, there were raccoons, squirrels, birds, and this sweet bunny card hopped right into my hands! Sent my MIL a card with the Mother bird feeding the baby birds in the nest -- kept the bunny card ....

Snake Bookmark

This is my complete bookmark
which I started at L.A.C.E. Day 2011.

Pattern by Christine Springett.

I found some cloth large enough to cover the new cookie pillow.
A real cover is in the mail!. This was ok for now.

I think I need to practice winding the bobbins - and try this again, maybe complete without the mistakes. The mistakes are so obvious.

Not bad for a first attempt.

L.A.C.E. Day 2011: Snake Bookmark

On Saturday, June 18th, Karol and I went to
L.A.C.E. Day in Downer's Grove, Illinois.

We took a Beginning Bobbin Lace class with
Susie Johnson and Jane O'Connor.

With wonderful instruction and demonstrations, all of the students
(except me) finished their snake.

I didn't catch on to the rhythm of the bobbins for awhile.

We took a break for lunch + enjoyed chatting with Diane, Lace-Lovin' Librarian, and members of the L.A.C.E. chapter.

Went back to our pillows + bobbins, (was so hot in that room!)
and I think it was easier for me to work the pattern
after we took a break.

Opted to un-pin before completing.

In addition to talking with Diane and Karol ....

Late in the day, was introduced to three other bloggers: Gina (blogging at Threads of a Tatting Goddess and Poems of Lace & Embroidery), Marilee (blogging at Yarn Player blog) , and Sue Anna (new to me blog Sue Anna's Blog).

Now that the snake is off the pillow -- I'm not sure how to complete this project without the pillow, bobbins, etc.! I had found some silk pins at Erica's in South Bend. I may use some spoolies that I bought in LaPorte at House of Stitches. Perhaps with the few bobbins I have and the spoolies I can finish. I don't have much more to do.

I have a pillow - not a lace pillow, but might be good enough to finish this little thing.

The hand painted bobbin with lavender flower

for the event.

I couldn't resist purchasing some pins at the registration area.

perfect for perking up my
wimpy picot

bought a couple sew mate shuttles
as more fiber can be winded on

Weeks ago, I had enclosed
this tatted butterfly
in a card sent to GF Sue (w/o blog)

She, in turn, asked one of her
friends to create a necklace
with the butterfly!

It is about 1.5" x 1/5" in size

The butterfly is surrounded
by beautiful paper with
metallic squigglies matching
the blue in the tatting

It is so much fun to wear!

During a recent shopping trip
to House of Stitches
there were a couple of glass pendants (available for purchase)
that open up -- so anything could be inserted

Or inserted until you were tired of
it and changed to something else!

I'm thrilled to own this tatted bookmark, made by her Mom Did I mention I'm going to take some tatting lessons on October 22nd at 1:00 p.m.? I'm not real sure I'll be good at it I've always admired this art and will appreciate it more once I know how it is created!
